Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant, Understood
What it does, why it matters for melanin-rich skin, and how we use it.
Dear Skin Editorial · August 29, 2026
Glutathione has a reputation problem. It has been marketed as a bleaching agent, sold in injections, and stripped of the nuance that makes it genuinely valuable. We use it for what it actually is: the body's principal antioxidant.
The Real Mechanism
Glutathione neutralises the free radicals produced by pollution, UV exposure and inflammation — the same free radicals that drive uneven tone and premature loss of firmness. Its influence on pigment is a side effect of calming that oxidative noise, not of bleaching the skin.
That distinction matters. The goal is never to make your skin lighter. It is to make it clearer, calmer and more evenly itself.
Topical, and honest about it
Applied topically and supported by vitamin C, glutathione is stable, well tolerated, and cumulative. It suits skin that looks dull, congested or greyish under stress.
It is not an overnight ingredient, and anyone promising several shades in six weeks is selling something else entirely.
Who It Suits
Skin exposed to city pollution, skin recovering from breakouts, and skin that has lost its lit-from-within quality. Use in the evening, under a rich cream.
