Understanding Hyperpigmentation in Melanin-Rich Skin

Melanin-rich skin, uneven tone, and what your complexion is really telling you

Dear Skin Editorial · August 14, 2026

Uneven skin tone is common in melanin-rich skin, but that doesn’t mean you have to simply accept it. Hyperpigmentation happens when the skin produces excess melanin, often leaving behind darker patches or spots after breakouts, irritation, sun exposure, or hormonal changes.

Why is hyperpigmentation more noticeable in melanin-rich skin?

Melanin-rich skin naturally produces more melanin, which means the skin can respond to inflammation or irritation with increased pigmentation. A small breakout or minor irritation may disappear quickly, but the dark mark it leaves behind can linger much longer.

What can trigger it?

Common triggers include acne, picking or squeezing spots, harsh skincare products, sun exposure, and hormonal changes. Even everyday irritation from over-exfoliating can contribute to stubborn dark spots.

Caring for uneven skin tone

The goal isn't to strip the skin or chase overnight results. A gentle routine can help support a more even-looking complexion over time.

Start with a mild cleanser, keep your skin moisturised, and introduce targeted ingredients gradually. Most importantly, use sunscreen daily. UV exposure can make existing pigmentation darker and harder to fade.

Give your skin time

Hyperpigmentation rarely disappears overnight. Consistency matters more than using a dozen products at once. Focus on keeping your skin calm, protected, and well cared for while giving targeted treatments time to work.

Your skin doesn't need to be changed. It needs to be understood.
